Advice of Rights

Every defendant appearing before a judge has certain rights:

  • You have the right to a speedy and public trial.
  • You have the right to an attorney. You may hire an attorney if you are financially able. If you are not financially able to hire an attorney, the judge may appoint an attorney for you if you are charged with an offense punishable by a jail sentence.
  • You have the right to appeal if found guilty.
  • You have the right to bail if arrested.
  • You have the right to compel witnesses to attend court.
  • You have the right to cross-examine your accusers and question any witnesses.
  • You have the right to inspect and examine court records.
  • You have the right to receive a copy of the criminal complaint against you.
  • You have the right to remain silent regarding your case. If you do speak, anything you say can be used against you in a court of law.

This list is not intended to be comprehensive; you may have other rights afforded by law.
