Dickens Downtown An annual Victorian holiday celebration known as Dickens Downtown takes place on the first Tuesday night in December in Downtown Northport. Dickens is a community supported gathering to celebrate the true spirit of Christmas involving Theatre Tuscaloosa performing scenes from "A Christmas Carol", local choirs, the 5th Alabama Regimental Band, a real English Town Crier, father Christmas, and business and neighborhood open houses.
The Globe Restaurant Located in Downtown Northport, the Globe Restaurant is a barn-like structure that used to house a dry goods store. It is now perhaps the most adventurous dining establishment in the state. Named after Shakespeare's first theater, the restaurant decor features a long English tavern-style bar and giant line drawings of famous scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The international menu favorites are pan sautéed orange roughy, tandoori chicken, stuffed pasta shells, vegetarian quesadillas, wild mushroom and sage pizzas and broiled tilapia.
Hidden Meadows Golf Course Located on Old Cove Road in the northwestern part of Northport, this 18 hole golf course offers something for every golf enthusiast. Course amenities include bentgrass greens, large teaching and practice facility and twilight rates. Trail passes are also offered on this soft spike only course.
Historic Downtown Northport Historic Downtown Northport is a must see for every visitor to the area. Settled in the early 19th century, the area boasts a collection of art galleries, stores, museums, and quaint restaurants. Tourists will find the brick street, ornate lighting, landscaping, and other amenities picturesque. Many of the merchants are descendents of some of the original business owners and builders. One can hardly miss the old wooden train trestle which serves as a major landmark to this area.
Kentuck Arts & Craft Center Located at 503 Main Avenue, the Kentuck Arts and Craft Center is located in a two story masonry building built in 1920 for a mercantile business. The center, which is headquarters for the annual Kentuck Festival, also serves as studios for seven artists and employs six people.
The Kentuck Festival The Kentuck Festival takes place the third weekend in October in Kentuck park (about one half mile west of downtown Northport). Originally starting as a small event on the sidewalks of downtown's Main Avenue in 1971, this Festival has grown to 300+ artists from throughout the United States. It is nationally recognized as one of the best folk art festivals in the country, attracting 30,000 people each year. People come from all over the South to see the work of nationally-acclaimed visionary folk artists and demonstrations by expert traditional craftsmen. Visual arts are augmented with musical performances, storytelling, children's arts activities and unique southern and ethnic specialty foods.
Lake Lurleen State Park Named after the late Governor Lurleen Burns Wallace, Lake Lurleen State Park is a scenic state park located on a 250 acre lake approximately 15 minutes from downtown Northport. The entire park, located just off U.S. Highway 82 on Tuscaloosa County Road 49, encompasses over 1,600 acres. Park amenities include a fully equipped campground, camp store, nature center, play and picnic areas, pavilions, swimming beach, bath house, bait and tackle shop, fishing piers, rental canoes and paddle boats. It is a family fun park ideal for spending the day or overnight camping. Lake Lurleen is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Maxwell-Peters Home Listed on the Alabama Historical Commission Register of Landmarks and Heritage, it is in its 4th generation of family ownership. A previous owner of the English Cottage Orné with coordinated trellis columns was an American Legion founding member. MPH is booked for weddings, parties, meetings, etc. and is open during Dickens and Kentuck. Visit http://www.maxwell-petershome.com/ for information and bookings.
Northport Civic Center Completed in 1985, the Northport Civic Center is the only convention style facility of its type in Tuscaloosa County. Located in city hall, the structure sits at the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and U.S. Highway 43. Numerous conventions and community meetings are held in this facility year-round.
Oliver Lock and Dam Located on the Black Warrior River in the Renaissance District of Northport, this lock and dam offers a public boat launching ramp and a tranquil view of the river and the City of Tuscaloosa. This project was completed in 1992.
The Shirley-Christian Home The Shirley-Christian Home, located at 512 Main Avenue, was built in the 1840's by James Shirley, an early Tuscaloosa County builder who in the 1850's erected the first brick commercial buildings in Northport. The house was the home of one of Northport's earliest families - the Christians. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the federal raised cottage is made of handmade brick.
