 City Leadership

Northport’s municipal government has operated under the Mayor-Council form of government since incorporation in which the Mayor and City Council are elected on a non-partisan basis to a four-year term of office which begins on the first Monday in November of each election year. Policy-making and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, which consists of one representative elected from each of the City's five Council Districts.

The City Council is responsible for, among other things, considering local resolutions and ordinances, adopting an annual budget, and appointing members to local boards and committees. The City Administrator is responsible for carrying out and enforcing the city's policies and ordinances

The Planning and Zoning Commission consist of 9 members which are appointed by the Mayor. This commission is responsible for approving and enforcing all Zoning and Subdivision issues within the City of Northport.

The Zoning Board of Adjustments consist of 7 members, 2 of which are super-numerary members. They are appointed by the City Council. This board is responsible for Zoning issues within the City of Northport.

We hope to provide as much information and guidance about the Mayor and City Council as possible. This includes how it works, who is responsible for what, what role it has in the community it serves and in promoting the social, economic and environmental well-being of the city as a whole.
